Reversal Chart Patterns

Reversal chart patterns provide traders with visual, repeatable signals that an existing trend may genuinely be losing momentum and preparing to change direction, building directly on the trend line and support-and-resistance concepts covered earlier in the Technical Analysis Essentials course.

This opening lesson in the Chart Patterns and Price Action course introduces two of the most widely recognized and reliably documented reversal patterns - the head and shoulders pattern and the double top or double bottom pattern - along with practical guidance on how to properly confirm a genuine reversal before acting on it. Recognizing these patterns reliably in real time, rather than only in hindsight when reviewing a historical chart, is a skill that develops with sustained, deliberate practice across many charts and many different currency pairs.

Head and Shoulders

The head and shoulders pattern forms with three peaks, the middle higher than the two surrounding shoulders, connected by a neckline.

It's a widely respected signal that an uptrend may be losing steam once price breaks below the neckline, and works in reverse for downtrends.

  • Three-Peak Structure: A head and shoulders pattern forms with a middle peak rising noticeably higher than the two surrounding shoulder peaks.
  • The Neckline: The neckline is a key support level connecting the pattern's two lows, marking the level whose break confirms the pattern.
  • Confirmed on a Break: The head and shoulders pattern is only considered genuinely complete once price decisively breaks below its neckline.
  • A Classic Reversal Signal: Head and shoulders remains one of the most widely recognized reversal patterns across the entire field of technical analysis.

Double Tops and Double Bottoms

A double top forms when price hits resistance twice without breaking higher, suggesting exhausted buying pressure and a possible reversal down.

A double bottom mirrors this at support, and both patterns tell a clear story of a failed attempt to extend the existing trend.

  • Double Top: A double top forms when price reaches a similar resistance level twice, suggesting fading buying pressure at that level.
  • Double Bottom: A double bottom forms when price reaches a similar support level twice, suggesting fading selling pressure at that level.
  • A Mirror-Image Pair: Double tops and double bottoms work identically to one another, just applied in opposite market directions.
  • Confirmation Needed: A confirmed break of the pattern's middle level meaningfully strengthens the overall reliability of either signal.

Confirming a Reversal Pattern

Confirming a pattern before acting matters, since entering on a still-forming pattern carries meaningfully elevated risk of failure.

Most traders wait for a decisive break of the key level, ideally with supporting volume, before treating a pattern as confirmed.

  • Head and Shoulders: Head and shoulders is a three-peak pattern that signals a potential reversal once its neckline is decisively broken.
  • Double Top: A double top's two similar highs suggest that underlying buying pressure at that level is genuinely starting to fade.
  • Double Bottom: A double bottom's two similar lows suggest that underlying selling pressure at that level is genuinely starting to fade.
  • Waiting for Confirmation: Waiting for a confirmed break of a pattern's key level meaningfully reduces the risk of acting on a false signal.
