Continuation Chart Patterns

Continuation chart patterns signal a temporary pause or period of consolidation within an existing, ongoing trend, after which that same trend is generally expected to resume in its original established direction, standing in clear contrast to the reversal patterns covered in the previous lesson.

This lesson introduces flags and pennants along with triangle patterns, two of the most commonly observed continuation formations across virtually every actively traded financial market, and explains practical, disciplined approaches to actually trading them once identified. Recognizing the meaningful difference between a genuine continuation pattern and an emerging reversal pattern is an important, developing skill that becomes considerably more intuitive with sustained practice across many real charts.

Flags and Pennants

Flags and pennants form after a sharp move called the flagpole, followed by brief consolidation before typically breaking out in the same direction.

A flag consolidates in a small parallel channel, a pennant in a small narrowing triangle, both forming and resolving relatively quickly.

  • Brief Consolidation: Flags and pennants both form as a short, well-defined pause immediately following a sharp price move.
  • Same-Direction Resolution: Both patterns typically resolve by continuing in the same direction as the sharp move that preceded them.
  • Flag Shape: A flag consolidates within a small, roughly parallel rectangular channel running against the preceding trend.
  • Pennant Shape: A pennant consolidates within a small, gradually narrowing symmetrical triangle shape after a sharp move.

Triangles

Triangles form as price consolidates between two converging trend lines, coming in symmetrical, ascending and descending variations.

A symmetrical triangle is fairly neutral, while ascending carries a bullish bias and descending a bearish one as the pattern narrows.

  • Narrowing Range: A triangle pattern forms as price consolidates into a progressively tightening, narrowing trading range over time.
  • Breakout Anticipation: Traders watch a narrowing triangle closely, since an eventual breakout in one direction becomes increasingly likely.
  • Symmetrical, Ascending or Descending: Different triangle shapes each carry a slightly different directional bias for the anticipated eventual breakout.
  • Volume on the Break: Rising volume on a triangle breakout helps confirm whether that move genuinely carries real conviction.

Trading Continuation Patterns

Trading these effectively means waiting for a confirmed breakout from the pattern's boundary before entering, rather than predicting the timing.

Placing a stop just on the opposite side of the boundary defines risk clearly should the anticipated breakout ultimately fail.

  • Flags: Flags are brief pauses that typically resolve by continuing in the direction of the move that preceded them.
  • Pennants: Pennants work similarly to flags, signaling a short consolidation before the underlying trend likely continues.
  • Triangles: Triangles are narrowing price ranges that often precede a decisive, meaningful breakout in one direction.
  • Confirming the Breakout: Waiting for a clear breakout with genuine momentum meaningfully reduces the risk of a costly false start.
