Building a Simple Strategy

Bringing together everything covered so far in this Technical Analysis Essentials course into one coherent, written trading strategy is an essential step that many aspiring traders unfortunately skip entirely, instead trading somewhat randomly based on whatever seems compelling on the chart in any given moment.

This lesson walks through the genuine process of defining clear, specific entry rules, clear and equally specific exit rules, and the importance of thoroughly testing any new strategy on a demo account before ever risking real capital on it. Completing this lesson will leave you with a practical, repeatable framework you can continue to refine and build upon as you progress through the more advanced strategy-focused lessons found later in this Trading Academy.

Defining Your Entry Rules

Defining clear, objective entry rules removes guesswork and emotion, replacing it with a consistent process you can evaluate and refine.

For example, a rule might require a bounce off support while RSI reads below 30, combining two earlier concepts into one testable condition.

  • Combining Signals: Pairing a specific price level with a confirming indicator reading adds genuine reliability to a single trade setup.
  • Objective Criteria: Entry rules should be specific and precise enough that they genuinely remove guesswork from your trading decisions.
  • Written Down in Advance: A documented, written rule set is considerably easier to follow consistently once real money is involved.
  • Repeatable Setups: Well-defined entry rules can be applied the exact same way every single time a similar setup appears.

Defining Your Exit Rules

Exit rules matter as much as entry rules, since knowing precisely when you'll close a trade prevents indecisive, emotionally-driven exits.

They typically include a stop loss defining maximum loss and a take profit or condition defining when to lock in a gain.

  • Stop Loss Placement: A stop loss level should be decided calmly before the trade, never adjusted emotionally once it's already losing.
  • Take Profit Targets: A take profit target should be set based on a realistic, genuinely favorable risk-to-reward ratio for that specific trade.
  • Removing In-the-Moment Decisions: Predefined exit rules meaningfully reduce the emotional interference that live, fluctuating profit and loss figures can cause.
  • Consistency Across Trades: Applying the same exit logic consistently across every trade is what genuinely builds long-term trading discipline.

Testing Before You Trade Live

Before risking real capital, thoroughly testing a strategy on a demo account reveals whether its rules genuinely hold up in live conditions.

Testing may reveal rules needing refinement or that certain pairs or sessions work better, and this process should be ongoing, not one-time.

  • Clear Entry Rules: Clear entry rules define exactly what specific conditions must be met before you'll genuinely consider taking a trade.
  • Clear Exit Rules: Clear exit rules set both your stop loss and your take profit levels well in advance of entering any trade.
  • Demo Testing: Running a newly developed strategy on a demo account first reveals real flaws before any genuine capital is at risk.
  • Reviewing Results Objectively: Judge any strategy's real performance over a meaningful sample of trades, not just a small, potentially misleading handful.
