Range Trading Strategies

Range trading takes a genuinely different strategic approach from the trend-following strategy covered in the previous lesson, instead capitalizing specifically on periods when a currency pair is trading within a well-defined, relatively contained horizontal range rather than pursuing any clear, sustained directional trend.

This lesson explains how to properly identify a genuine trading range, how to trade its established upper and lower boundaries effectively, and how to recognize the important warning signs that a previously reliable range may genuinely be in the process of breaking down entirely. Building on the support and resistance concepts covered extensively earlier in this Trading Academy, range trading represents a genuinely complementary strategic approach to the trend-following strategy already covered.

Identifying a Range

A trading range means price repeatedly bouncing between defined resistance and support without a decisive breakout.

Ranges develop most commonly during lower volatility, like the quieter Asian session, or ahead of major scheduled data.

  • Stable Boundaries: A genuine trading range features a relatively consistent, well-defined support and resistance boundary over time.
  • Absence of Clear Trend: Price within an established range oscillates back and forth without pursuing any clear longer-term direction.
  • Repeated Testing: A range's boundaries are typically tested multiple separate times before any eventual, decisive breakout occurs.
  • A Distinct Market Condition: Range-bound conditions require a genuinely different trading approach than clearly trending market conditions.

Trading the Boundaries

Trading a range means buying near support and selling near resistance, fading each approach to an extreme rather than expecting a breakout.

This benefits from oscillators like RSI or Stochastic, since overbought/oversold readings confirm at the range's boundaries.

  • Buying Near Support: Buying near an established lower support boundary is one of the most common entry points within a trading range.
  • Selling Near Resistance: Selling near an established upper resistance boundary provides the mirror-image entry point within that same range.
  • Tight Stop Placement: Stop loss orders within a range trade are typically set just beyond the range's own established boundary.
  • Reference-Based Entries: A range's own clearly defined edges provide genuinely clear, easily repeatable entry points for trading it.

Knowing When a Range Is Breaking

Knowing when a range is genuinely breaking down, not just testing a boundary, is essential to avoid costly trades against a new trend.

A decisive close beyond a boundary with increased volume is a practical warning sign of a transitioning breakout scenario.

  • Identifying the Range: A stable, well-defined support and resistance boundary without any clear underlying trend defines a genuine range.
  • Buying Support, Selling Resistance: Buying near support and selling near resistance form the two core entries of a disciplined range-trading approach.
  • Tight Risk Management: Range trading genuinely requires disciplined, tightly placed stop losses positioned just beyond the range boundaries.
  • Watching for a Breakout: Every trading range eventually ends, so staying alert to a genuinely decisive break matters considerably.
